Jul 29, 1773An earthquake struck Guatemala on July 29, 1773 and had an estimated epicentral intensity magnitude of 7.5 Mi. It was followed by numerous aftershocks which went on for six months. The series of all these earthquakes is referred to as the Santa Marta earthquakes as it started on the feast day of Saint Martha. With an intensity of approximately 7.5, the Santa Marta earthquakes destroyed much of Antigua Guatemala, at that time the colonial capital of Central America. About 500 to 600 people died immediately and at least another 600 died from starvation and disease as a result of the earthquake.Un terremoto sacude Guatemala el 29 de julio 1773 y tuvo una magnitud estimada de 7,5 de intensidad epicentral (Mi). Fue seguido por numerosos sismos que se prolongaron durante seis meses. La serie de todos estos terremotos se conoce como los terremotos de Santa Marta, ya que comenzó en el día de la fiesta de Santa Marta. Con una intensidad de alrededor del 7,5, los terremotos de Santa Marta destruyeron gran parte de Antigua Guatemala, en ese momento la capital colonial de Centroamérica. Cerca de 500 a 600 personas murieron inmediatamente y al menos otras 600 murieron de hambre y enfermedades como consecuencia del terremoto.
